Hurricane Laura hit western Louisiana and the upper Texas coast. In addition, Hurricane Laura has caused significant damage in areas in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba. The storm has grown from a Category 1 to a high-end Category 3 in almost two days and made landfall as a catastrophic Category 4 storm. Many communities that were severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey were near the point of landfall, and still need to rebuild and restore what was destroyed in 2017.

As countries around the world have examined their own emergency relief plans in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in areas of the southern United States, COVID-19 has created a compounding crisis with a storm season that is expected to be more intense and active than previous years.

Communities across the country have now been forced to reconcile numerous impending crises — keeping residents safe while responding to an ongoing public health crisis and response to the hurricane season that is already underway.

While damage from Hurricane Laura continues to unfold, first responders are working tirelessly to reach the communities left in its path. Due to the escalating and numerous emergencies, support for first responders is urgently needed — please consider supporting these efforts as CGI partners meet immediate humanitarian needs and continue to address public health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please check back as we will keep this list updated with all CGI Action Network members who are responding to the needs of the impacted communities.

Airlink

Airlink is currently coordinating air transportation to the Gulf Coast for first responders from several NGO partners and will continue to support response efforts from this capacity.

Americares

Americares has prepositioned drinking water in Shreveport, La. to be distributed to affected communities across the region, and is in coordination with their more than 60 health clinic partners in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi, as well as with other emergency agencies. They stand ready to provide relief supplies, grant support, and training and technical assistance in affected areas.

Direct Relief

This year (as in every year), Direct Relief prepositioned hurricane preparedness packs containing commonly requested medical supplies all along the Gulf Coast which can help health centers meet key needs after a disaster, particularly for patients with chronic disease. Direct Relief has been in contact with all of its partner health facilities and is also coordinating with the Primary Care Associations of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, and the Free Clinic Association of Texas.

Good360

Good360 is coordinating with State VOADs and nonprofit partners in impacted areas and are preparing to mobilize response resources as needs emerge.

International Medical Corps (IMC)

IMC is monitoring the storm and preparing to deploy to support the health needs on the ground if needed.

World Central Kitchen (WKC)

WCK has teams preparing in Beaumont, TX and Lafayette, LA who will begin cooking meals to feed local communities as soon as the storm passes.
